Poet Spike:

"His claws have riven openings through the clouds,

He is rising with great power,

I see him grow grey, dawn-like, about to break --"

*

Buffy, interrupting:

"--the day, who means to rip

My hand from yours, dammit. That's not the plan.

At last we've found a chance to do it,

Smuggled you upstairs, and now - aw, screw it --

A mere eight hours? Not long enough by far!

Guess I gotta let you go now . . . if I can.

Only your many virtues persuaded me to it."

*

Spike:

"At last, positive affirmation!"

*

Xander, beneath Buffy's window:

"Good morning, good morning, good morning! Anybody home?"

*

Buffy:

"What's all this with you and singing? Ohmigod you've got me down

Got me weeping, got me wailing -- look, alright, get out of town

With your ranting and your railing, every morning just round dawn

Guys are swimming, guys are sailing, playing football -- oops, wrong song

Got Mom's van, got my license -- so go home James! -- shoo! begone!

I could set my clock by you.

Lemme alone, if you wanna be true

And I'll reward you for it as I dare--"

*

Xander:

"Thought I heard voices. Someone else up there?"

*

Buffy:

"--what? Nobody." Aside: "Spike! Stay here!"

*

Xander:

"Not gonna fall for that one this time, Buffy.

What, am I blind in one eye?

Been patrolling all night, but I've just seen first light

Gotta tell ya, get rid of the guy

Be he living or dead, kick him out of your bed

Though I'd rather let sleeping dogs lie

As a friend, let me warn you--

Flaming vamp breath! Get a clue

If that's Spike up there, he's gonna die!"

*

Spike internal dialogue:

New: "Seek out reality, leave things that seem."

Old: "What, be a singer born and lack a theme?"

New: "Isaiah's coal, what more can man desire?"

Old: "Struck dumb in the simplicity of fire!"

New: "Look on that fire, salvation walks within."

Old: "What theme has Giles but original sin?"

*

Dawn, through another window:

"Xander, would you quit it with the noise already??

It's frickin' five A. M.!"

*

Buffy/Spike duet:

Buffy: "Whatever pleases you, watchman! But leave him here

Who brought me love and got love back at last--"

Spike: "That star? It's Venus rising and not setting.

That light is in the west and not the east.

That birdsong? A nightingale, not a lark."

Buffy: "--yep, I'm the Slayer. I know light from dark.

Oh, Spike! I have an ill-divining soul.

It showed you to me lying in my bed

As one dead in the bottom of a tomb.

Every night from now on, save me from my dreams."

Spike: "Never mind. Let Xander sulk under that tree.

I'm inside. Upstairs. At last. You're here with me."

*

Dawn, through her window, to Xander:

"Get out, get out, GET OUT!"

*

Soulless Spike:

"I offer to love's play

my dark proclivities."

*

Buffy:

"My true Peroxide King!"

*

Narrative:

At the glances that Day shot through the window-glass,

As the watchman sang his warning,

She felt panic for the vamp who lay with her. She pressed

Her little breasts against his breast.

But the vamp did not forget his brave desire

(not even the thought of Xander could quell him):

By kisses and more, closer and closer,

Leave-taking yielded him love's reward.
