Born July 2003, we were thrilled to welcome "Bongo", a Gilly grandson, to our household! He was our pick of the Chili/Nefer breeding, bred by John Ross, Counterpoint Whippets, Saskatchewan.
At his first show, he went Best of Breed and Group 2nd for 5 points from the 6-9 Puppy class (pictured below), defeating Am.Ch. Open dogs. Bongo continued his winning ways and finished in Canada with another Group 2nd from the puppy class over Specials at 9 months of age.
Bongo's American show debut resulted in a 5 point RW award at the 2004 Washington Whippet Specialty. At his first US show in 2005, Bongo was awarded a 3 point major under breeder-judge Ann Billups! At his next show, he went Best of Winners for another major at the AWC Supported entry in Oregon in July. And even better...Bongo won Best of Winners for a 5 point major at the Washington Whippet Specialty on August 5th (pictured above) - his third major in four shows that year. Bongo finished his American championship in October 2005, winning all but one point under breeder-judges. The following day he took Best of Breed his first time out as a Special, under breeder-judge, Isabel Stoffers.
Bongo's lure coursing debut was just as spectacular - a 1st and a 2nd placement for 70 points in only 3 trials! He finished his Field Championship with another 2nd placement in November, 2005. Bongo is a very keen sprint racer, with several Top Ten finishes and has 6 ARX race championship points. He is the #2 CWA Conformation Whippet for 2004 and 2005, and #1 for 2006.
Bongo was only shown a handful of times in 2007 but with outstanding results - Best of Breed and Group 1st under Australian breeder-judge, John Thompson in May; Best Opposite Sex (to his daughter, Jill!) at the Rocky Mtn. Whippet Club Specialty in July; Award of Merit at the Canadian National Specialty Show in August (Jill won it!); and in his only US appearance, First Award of Merit in an entry of 100+ at the Western Washington Whippet Specialty Show.
Bongo was shown 4 times in 2008 - BOB over multi BIS specials at an all-breed show, an Award of Merit at the LMWA Whippet Specialty in July, and BEST IN SPECIALTY show at the Whippet Club of BC Specialty also in July. Following up on his Canadian Specialty win, two weeks later, Bongo was awarded SPECIALTY BEST OF BREED at the Western Washington Hound Assoc. Specialty Show over 76 Whippets two weeks later - 2 weeks, 2 countries, 2 specialty wins!
Now shown only at Specialty shows, Bongo continues his winning ways with two more Canadian Specialty wins in 2009 - under breeder-judges Stacey Davis and Ann Billups. He made his Veteran's debut in 2010 with yet another Specialty win under Barbara O'Neill. Bongo has an outstanding temperament, a truly delightful character - he loves everyone he meets, and is a joy to live with.
Bongo has sired some lovely litters and his puppies have been making a name for themselves in the ring, on the track and in the coursing field. We are very proud of his FIFTEEN champion kids, several Field Champions, a Racing Champion son and several others pointed in racing and coursing. Four of his kids have won Specialty shows in both Canada and the USA. He is the sire of Canada's #1 Whippet for 2009, MSBIS CH. Counterpoint Genuine Risk. Click HERE to view some of his offspring.
