Tutorial: Creating faces in Strata 3D

(also StudioPro 2.5; note that some tools are not available in Strata 3Dbase)

Version 1.0.2  by Greg Glover

This is just one approach to face modeling. It isn't necessarily the best way to do it, but it has worked for me.

I start with side-view skinned Illustrator profiles (that is, vertical "slices" starting down the middle of the face and ending at the right ear). You can work from a photo, or a real person. Taking pictures of a vertical slit of light shining on a person's face would probably help. Or if your model doesn't mind you drawing reference lines directly on the skin... Just don't put too much detail into your profiles (leave out the eyes, mouth and other details), and think of how the control points will line up.

Import your profiles into Strata 3D and offset them horizontally outward so they sit pretty much where they should be in space. Then skin them, and scale the width of the face so it looks natural. You might also have to tweak the positioning of the ribs in edit mode to get it just right.
