Countrywoman/Surgeon,
Strongin’s second full-length book published by L’Epervier Press
in 1979. Its 42 poems are organized into three sections.
The first
section deals with the American Civil War and with what Strongin has called
Wyeth Country, the spiritual topography of New England.
The second
section brings together a number of Strongin’s poems on various themes.
The third
section expands upon Strongin’s central metaphors of illness, medicine,
and the hospital, as she explores what it means to be a woman doctor.
