Gods In The Garden

Gardnerians come in an infinite variety of shapes, sizes, personalities, and talents. While all share a reverence for the earth and those living things that share it with us; a few, like me, manifest that reverence in the physical world in the form of nurturing a green space of our own. A garden can be as small as a pot on a veranda or as large as a park. Both can reflect love for the Gods.

My space is a small urban yard. It began life as the usual collection of grass and trees that surround so many homes. Over the years, it has become a work of reverence. Like a giant bonsai, it is tweaked and pruned and pinched each year to resemble physically what I see in my mind's eye as a space of hallowed green space. Here I can sit and feel my tiny space is part of the huge living organism that is the earth. But also, with additions of magical aspects, I can feel also the presence of beings and energies beyond those visible to the eye.

Over the years, my mate and I have hauled in huge amounts of raw local stone, salvaged from construction sites and roadsides. Some have been used to create raised beds for plants, others grew into a delightful fireplace in the south. Some surround the pond in the west. The space grew into areas specific to certain magical practices. One area is a magical circle, with elemental aspects at the cardinal directional points. Fireplace in the south, pond in the west, Stone alter in the north, and an apple tree in the east. One area is for the growing of useful plants. One bed is filled with food plants, and other with herbs, and still a third with flowers.

One area is simply for beauty, and is being slowly groomed to reflect nature in Her normal state. The grass area gets smaller every year as the lawn is taken bit by bit by expanding areas of plant life. Native plants grow strong and healthy in their natural habitat, and there are no pesticides or other poisons in my space.

Many times, I am unaware of changes that will come to my garden, as I sit in meditation and will suddenly see a vision of what should come next. I do not doubt that the divine has a hand in the evolution of my green space. My part is simply to communicate the vision to my life partner, who transforms that vision in to reality. He builds, and I plant, and together we create a living work of magic. Even though we do not share a religion, his Gods and Mine share space in our garden, and it is a reflection of our love for one another, and our connection to the divine.
