This appears to be Robin Trower's year. Ex of Procol Harum, Trower has long been a fine rock guitarist. But this is his money year. When one Academy of Music concert on Friday(18) went clean fast, promotor Howard Stein skedded another. That too was SRO (sold right out).
Actually, things began badly at the early show as an offstage musical intro, complete with the usual smoke effects, was not followed by the set. Trower and his two confreres had to enter twice as equipement problems delayed their actual beginning.
Once started, however , the turn had youthful auditors cheering. Trower di not display the trickery musicianshiptypical of most leading guitarists. But although the volume was high decibel, Trower appeared never to miss a note. Without excessive flashes, he was first rate as were bass guitarist James Dewar, the trio's vocalist, and drummer Bill Lordan, new to the combo. Set included material from Trower's three Chrysalis albums, mostly good rock origionals, another strong point.
