Magazine Project… written by Stephanie Ann Johanson

The first issue of Neo-opsis Science Fiction Magazine came out in print on October 10th, 2003.

The word “Neo-opsis” is a mix of root words. ‘Neo’ meaning ’new’ and ‘opsis’ mean ‘opinion’ and/or ‘view’.  It was mentioned that the word should be spelled ‘neopsis’, but we have grown rather fond of the ‘o-o’, which looks like a pair of glasses.

The second issue of Neo-opsis Science Fiction Magazine came out in print on February 17, 2004.

Description of the magazine

Neo-opsis Science Fiction Magazine is quarterly magazine (four issues per year). It is approximately 8” by 5 ½”, 80 pages per issue, with a full colour cover and black & white interior illustrations. Neo-opsis Science Fiction Magazine has fiction, opinion columns, essays, and “letters to the editor”. Our hope is to maintain a paying market for the works of writers and artists.  Guidelines for submissions are at www.neo-opsis.ca/guidelines.htm and also on our secondary site at http://members.shaw.ca/Neoopsis/Guide.htm.  If you have any questions about the guidelines please email them to us at neoopsis@shaw.ca.

Karl Johanson is the editor and chief of Neo-opsis Science Fiction Magazine. Karl was formerly an editor of “Under the Ozone Hole,” winner of four Aurora Awards.  On the right you should see the cover of issue 9 of “Under the Ozone Hole”. (If you don’t see it, try hitting refresh or waiting a bit longer for it to load.) Not all the covers of “Under the Ozone Hole” were in colour. This particular cover was done as a gag cover, where noted fan and professor Robert Runté ended up with his head pasted on the bodies of the Star Trek the Next Generation crew. Dwight Lockhart created the cover. Dwight has an amazing talent with an airbrush.

Stephanie Ann Johanson (that’s me) will be art director, assistant editor and on staff artist for Neo-opsis Science Fiction Magazine. I have over 20 years experience as an artist, exhibiting my work at Science Fiction conventions and other art shows. The cover at the top of this page is my painting, “Dragon & Missile”. I have been out of circulation for a bit, while I was working for Disney Interactive Victoria, but with the planning of our magazine I have returned to my painting to create the first cover of Neo-opsis Science Fiction Magazine.
