205. John Rose
Jack may also be RIN 234, the illegitimate son of Maggie Rose who then
married Alex Hay. He is more probably the third son of James Rose and
Lorena Church, probably born in Haley Station, Ross twp, Renfrew, ON.
The 1881 census shows him in the Nippissing Dist age 4.
Died in Kamsack Nursing Home.
479. John Edwin Rose
May have died in Kamsack, SK. Edwin married Helena Capstick but later
divorced.
206. William Andrew Rose
Buried in Groveland cemetry, Dundas Minnesota. They were dairy
farmers. Apparently William left home (Starbuck, MB) as there were not
enough resources to feed the family. He heard through a horse trader
named Cowden (?) of the area in Bridgewater Township in Rice County,
Minnesota, where there was land available for homesteading. He walked
to the Dundas area around the turn of the century and farmed (dairy)
there the rest of his life.1 >From 1961 to 1966 William wrote several
letters to his first cousin Laura Ann Rose Hamilton which are currently
in the compiler's possession. These chatty letters give a considerable
amount of information on his life and various family members. William
was a Methodist most of his life. Well into his 80's he clearly got
a lot
of enjoyment out of gardening. Some recollections of Phoebe Sorem
McNeill1: "My Grandpa loved being a farmer, and in his later years, when
he didn't do much active farming, he raised a HUGE garden, and gave much
of it away, that we couldn't freeze. My Grandma and my mother had
canned a lot when I was young and before that. Gramp never really gave
up. When he was 80+ years old, he was helping us mend some fences. He
was riding in the back of a two-wheeled trailer, being pulled by a
tractor. It hit a bump and he fell out. We took him to his doctor, who
discovered that he had broken his neck. And to top that, the doctor said
he could see evidence of TWO other breaks in his neck bones. Dr Street,
an old army doctor, said: "You old fool! Most people don't even
survive one
broken neck!" After that Gramp took it a bit easier. He had a stoke 6
months before he died, but in his last month, he talked again of getting
out in his garden in the spring and all the things he would be
planting."
"I think my Grandpa and Gramma were engaged for a while before they
married, as I have a locket watch of my Grandma's with a little heart
dated 1903, that has pictures of both William and Phoebe as young
people."
Probably also buried in Groveland cemetery, Dunas Minnesota, USA. Some
recollections of Phoebe Sorem McNeill1: "My Grandpa loved being a
farmer, and in his later years, when he didn't do much active
farming, he
raised a HUGE garden, and gave much of it away, that we couldn't freeze.

1845; the Cheney family is thought to have come to England from France
with William the Conqueror. In addition to the children indicated,
Phoebe
and William also had premature twins, a boy and a girl, who died at
birth
and are buried on the farm.1 Phoebe died of a ruptured bowel.

Hazel McLaughlin
Quilts that are over 100 years old
by Patricia Hitsman, Advance Staff Reporter
In the last 16 years, Kemptville resident Hazel McLaughlin has quilted 496 quilts. The 75-year-old has worked on quilts that are more than 100 years old. One particular quilt that she quilted, which was made in the third quarter of the nineteenth century, has appeared in a book about quilts called Quilts and other bed coverings in the Canadian tradition, by Ruth McKendry. The same quilt has also appeared in the August 1980 Readers Digest. Of the 496, McLaughlin says about 15 of them have been antiques. She says there is definitely a different texture in the older fabrics she has worked on compared to todays fabrics. McLaughlin spoke of one quilt that was so brittle, that when she went to pull the thread through, the knot pulled the piece of fabric with it. Ive been quilting since I was a teenager, said McLaughlin. We used to have quilting bees when I was growing up, she added. When McLaughlin began quilting for other people in 1974, she said she really liked it, so she kept it up. The quilts she has quilted, have left her home at 205 Dodson St., and been carried to such places as Calgary, Vancouver, California and Florida. One lady who brought me in the top part to quilt said she later sold it to someone in Ireland, said McLaughlin. Many people from Kemptville, Richmond, Stittsville, Ottawa and Kanata come to McLaughlin to have her do their quilting for them.Ive quilted 496 quilts Hazel McLaughlin, 75, has quilted 496 quilts in the last 16 years, some of which have been more than 200 years old. At her home on Dodson Street, she is holding one of the quilts she is now working on.
