33. Sarah Helferich

DEATH: Death of Mrs. Gillespie, an Old Resident of Mersea
With Sorrow we have to record the death of one of our oldest and most respectable citizens in the person of Mrs. Sarah Gillespie, who passed away Feb 14 1897 after two hours of singing and prayer with her minister, Rev Baker. She was a Christian and charitable person always ready to help in times of need and had a large circle of friends.
Deceased was born at Gottenburg, Holland, the 23rd June 1807 and spent some time on the Isle Of Wright, where the family residence was situated and where they were intimate with the Duke of Cambridge. Her father, Mr. J. Helferich was master tailor for a regiment in England, her mother's maiden mame being Miss Annie Moore of London, England a niece of Sir John Moore..
Mrs Gillespie came with her parents to America and landed at Quebec in 1821 where they resided for a time and where her mother died. Here Miss Helferich was married to Mr. George Gillespie, who was born in Belfast Ireland; being of Scotch parents he was educated at Glasgow University. They resided at Perth for a time and then came to Romney where they were extensive land holders and from there came to Talbot street, Mersea. Mr. Gillespie was a high standing member of the Masonic order. He died March 6, 1883 and since that time Mrs. Gillespie resided on the homestead until a few weeks of her death where her children frequently visited her and were always warmly received.
The members of the family living are:
William Gillespie of Windsor; Mrs. Beno on the Beno homestead, Mersea; James Gillespie, mason, in Bay City Mich.; Mrs. Louisa Agla, Arner Ont.; Alexander Gillespie, engineer, Oak Harbour, Ohio; Captain Isaac Gillespie, Toledo, Ohio; Mrs. Ford, Kingsville Ont.; George Gillespie, carpenter, Toledo Ohio.

Ancestors of George G. Gillespie
In an obituary for Sarah (Helferich) Gillespie it was stated that her husband George Gillespie was educated at Glasgow University even though he was born in Belfast of Scotch parents. In May of 2003 an enquiry was send to the University, and they replied that a George Gillespie had enrolled in1821, studied Latin in 1821-1822, Greek in 1822-1823, Logic in 1823-1824, and Ethics in 1824-1825, but there was no record of his graduation. The file also said that he was a merchant in Glasgow, and the 5th son of John Gillespie a minister at Arroquar. Research has shown that John Gillespie was the Minister of Arroquar (also spelled as Arrochar) from 1780 until his death on the 28th of August, 1816. No listing of John Gillespie’s family has been found, but all of these dates fit in with George’s birth date of 1803, and his marriage at Quebec in 1830. Therefore there is some possibility that the George identified by Glasgow University as the son of John Gillespie is the husband of Sarah Helferich.
