"Death of Mrs. Gillespie, an Old Resident of Mersea
With Sorrow we have to record the death of one of our oldest and most
respectable citizens in the person of Mrs. Sarah Gillespie, who passed away
Feb 14 1897 after two hours of singing and prayer with her minister, Rev
Baker. She was a Christian and charitable person always ready to help in
times of need and had a large circle of friends.
Deceased was born at Gottenburg, Holland, the 23rd June 1807 and spent
some time on the Isle Of Wright, where the family residence was situated
and where they were intimate with the Duke of Cambridge. Her father, Mr. J.
Helferich was master tailor for a regiment in England, her mother's maiden
mame being Miss Annie Moore of London, England a niece of Sir John Moore..
Mrs Gillespie came with her parents to America and landed at Quebec in
1821 where they resided for a time and where her mother died. Here Miss
Helferich was married to Mr. George Gillespie, who was born in Belfast
Ireland; being of Scotch parents he was educated at Glasgow University.
They resided at Perth for a time and then came to Romney where they were
extensive land holders and from there came to Talbot street, Mersea. Mr.
Gillespie was a high standing member of the Masonic order. He died March 6,
1883 and since that time Mrs. Gillespie resided on the homestead until a
few weeks of her death where her children frequently visited her and were
always warmly received.
The members of the family living are:
William Gillespie of Windsor; Mrs. Beno on the Beno homestead, Mersea;
James Gillespie, mason, in Bay City Mich.; Mrs. Louisa Agla, Arner Ont.;
Alexander Gillespie, engineer, Oak Harbour, Ohio; Captain Isaac Gillespie,

GRAND TRAVERSE HERALD MAY 1889 John Helffrich, an old pioneer, died at his home last Thursday at the age of 72. Mr. Helffrich was born in Sussex county, England, in 1810, and lived there until he was quite a young man. He lived in Detroit for a number of years and worked at his trade which was ship carpentering, also sailing a number of years. In 1851 he married Charlotte Brown, and in the fall of '55 he moved to Grand Traverse and bought and cleared the place that he has lived on for 34 years. Mr. Helffrich was an honest, hard working man. In his dealing with his neighbors he was strictly honest to the penny. His word was never disputed in his family or among those who knew him. We have been acquainted with him for 25 years and in all that time we have never seen him but once away from his farm. He leaves four sons and two daughters, all settled in homes of their own, and with the exception of two; all live in sight of their parental home. Years ago Mr. Helffrich united with the Baptist church, and until his death he was a quiet advocate of his Master. The services were conducted at the house, Rev. Mr. Haynes delivered some well chosen and touching remarks from the words "Thy will be done." Also the choir had sung "Shall we gather at the rive?" "Waiting and watching," "Work for the night is coming," a large concourse of friends and neighbors followed him to his final resting place in the Hillside cemetery. Mrs. Helffrich and her family have the sympathy of their friends and neighbors in their great bereavement."

"Gwen Davis of the Anglo-German Family History Society tells me that she had found the baptismal reference for Isaac John and it states this son of Helserrich Jno. & Anne, born 22 Dec 1810 & baptised 13 Jan 1811 at St. Peter's Church, Bexhill-on-sea. The register is a part recording for 1804 to 1814, and there were no other records of that or similar name.

Death of Mrs. Margaret Helfrich
"Amherstburg Echo Dec. 18, 1925 researched by Robert Huggard
---------------------------------------------------------------
Formerly of Colchester South
--------------------------------------------------------------- Mrs. Margaret Helfrich died November 25th, 1925, at the home of her daughter W.J. Cundy, in Washington Mich., at the advanced age of 95 years and nearly four months. Rev. R. Chase, of the M.E. church at Washington, conducted the services, with burial at Prestonville cemetery beside her husband. The six sons officiated as pllbearers, the same service they performed for their father twenty-two years ago. Margaret Brown Helfrich was born Aug 1st, 1830 in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and at the age of 16 came with a brother, James, to Colchester, Canada, to live with an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Bell, crossing the ocean in a sailboat of those days. The journey was so long, so tedious and so much seasickness withal that she never had a desire to revisit the home of her childhood, although having many relatives there. Oct. 1st, 1851, she married Geo. Helfrich at Harrow, who preceded her many years to the heavenly home. About fourty-four years ago they moved from Harrow to a farm south of Disco, Mich., where they resided until ill health compelled them to sell their farm, soon after buying a home in Washington village, where Mr. Helfrich died Feb. 18th, 1903. Much of the time since she had lived with her daughter Minnie. Mrs. Helfrich grew up on in the faith of the Scotch Presbyterian Church, but after marriage joined with her husband the Wesleyan Methodist of Canada, transferring their membership to the Methodist Protestant Church when they came to Michigan, as that seemed the most like their former home church. She ws a home lover, a home maker and ever a faithful christian, striving to bring up her large family in the fear and admonition of the Lord. To George and Margaret Helfrich twelve children were bron, of whom nine are still living. They are Wallace, of Disco; Thomas, of Detroit; James, of Royal Oak; John of Ypsilanti; David, of Clio; Ernest, of Birch Run; Mrs. W. J. Cundy, of Washington; Mrs. Frank Fangboner, of Rochester, and Mrs. Max Cowell, of Clio. Also there are 30 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren, besides many nieces and Nephews."5Buford P.
