The construction of my gazebo paralleled my Master of Adult Education studies and the completion of my thesis, Training in Restorative Justice: Enhancing Praxis with Public School Educators, at St. Francis Xavier University. Aside from a wonderful place to visit in, my gazebo became a metaphor of "creating a space for dialogue." After visiting this site a friend looked up the etymology of gazebo. She found, “Gazebo turret, look-out, perhaps jocular use of GAZE and in imitation of the Latin future tense ending suggested by –ebo.” We both acknowledged that we had always loved the sound of the word Gazebo. The idea that it is an invented “fun” Latin word that “looks toward the future” adds depth to my use of this metaphor and reflects my hope in the power of dialogue to shape the future.

Whether in my role as a counselor, a restorative justice facilitator and trainer, or my personal relationships with my God, my family, and my friends—creating a space for dialogue is a significant focus in my life. My wish is that through visiting this web page you will recognize the value of attending to the potential in your "spaces." The personal qualities and values I hold, the structures and interventions I work with, and my awareness of the importance of "praxis" (action with reflection) are all elements in developing and maintaining a "space for dialogue."
