Kevin Taft launches book at legislature media
conference

Kevin Taft unveiled Democracy Derailed this morning at a media conference in the legislature rotunda. "It's a frail thing, democracy," said Taft. "And there's no province in this country where the democratic process is so manipulated, so blatantly. ... The launching of this book is a personal statement that Albertans don't have to take it any more."
Asked why he wrote the book, Taft responded, "This is a story that needs to be told. I've gone around this province for years now, and I've seen people who are frustrated because they can't hold this government to account. They're frustrated over the failure to provide health care. And they speak, and they rally, and they write, and they get nothing. They're frustrated over water transfers from the Red Deer River to the north edge of Calgary. They go through the process, they go to the hearings, and they're shut down. They're frustrated over terrible services in long-term care.
"Over and over and over, people say to us that they cannot hold their government to account anymore. This book tells them why. This book explains that breakdown to them, and gives them an option of how to close that gap."
