Welcome

This is the home page for Stephen Rees's web presence

Some time ago I started a blog on Wordpress. That covers my main professional interests – planning and transportation. This is getting increasingly stretched as I keep finding other things to write about so I have now started another on Blogger.

I have been putting my photos on the web for some time. Since I decided to spend some money on extra storage most of my pictures now go on flickr. I think I am beginning to get the hang of getting flickr to work with blogs, but the Wordpress layout I have chosen could probably be more accommodating. (I tried changing it once and the mess was unbelievable!) Somewhat distressingly I understand that Microsoft have started talks with Yahoo (who now own flickr) to try and unite against Google.

I was also one of the earliest contributors to Panorama Explorer, which includes a slide show of locations around here. I have stopped putting more pictures there as flickr has mapping. I have also found that i cannot get onto my identity at PE and they keep sending me email which I cannot stop. If you know how to do this, let me know!

I did put some pictures on webshots. For railway and transit pictures, I am running out of space on fotopic. One way of coping with this was to move the better North American locomotive “roster” shots to loco photo – but they have exacting standards. As one of my flickr contacts said, it does rather take the fun out of photography.

Another is to create new albums on railroad picture archives where the standards are more flexible and a wider variety of images can be posted.

If you are looking for the FAQ for alt.binaries.pictures.rail it is now here. For posting a bunch of pictures to newsgroups I use Powerpost 2000, which is freeware. Right click on the link to download a zip file, and be sure to read the readme.txt file!

I am going to use googlepages to create things where the stimulation of feedback is less important. I used that to create the tribute to my Mum, which is linked below. Sometimes I just want to get my ideas out there and need a mix of text and pictures, and, ideally, references to sources in live links. Projects in mind at the moment include a rant on bus stops and a review of convenience stores.

I also take pictures for BCVirtualTour and have helped agents with listings in Richmond and Surrey. As this is supposed to be a source of income I would be pleased to help you if you want to sell your home. There's a link to email me on that page.

And the rest of the time I am now tending a swing bridge.
