Traditionally, Russian Forces have considered pistols useless and preferred the use of full sized rifles and submachine guns. By the end of the century, it became obvious that pistols were an integral part of an combat unit because of their small, easy to operate size and the ease with which they could be concealed for operations where blatant displays of firepower were politically unsavory. To meet the new demand for combat handguns, Baikal Trade Firm developed a series of pistol in various calibers. The MR-445 Varjag is a full sized automatic pistol chambered for the powerful .40 caliber Smith & Wesson round used by many western police forces. It holds 15 rounds and readily accepts tactical flashlights and laser aiming devices.

For nearly forty years, the venerable PM Makarov has served with the Soviet Red Army and now the Russian Federation Armed Forces. Renown for it simple and extremely reliable design, the Makarov can be found in abundance across the globe. In the early nineties, it became apparent that the low power 9x18mm cartridge and small eight round magazine of the PM was not meeting the needs of the military and law enforcement units using it. The PMM was the solution to the problem. The new 9x18mm Improved Makarov cartridge gives the pistol some much needed stopping power and the payload is increased to 12 rounds with a fatter double stacked magazine. The PMM still retains the extremely small and lightweight features of the original PM but with the extra power and payload required to compete as a modern combat sidearm. Russian Special Operations and Military Forces still fervently use the trusty Makatov because of it's easily concealablity, low encumberance, rugged, reliable design and abundance of spare and replacement parts.
