Western Canadian New Year Open 2004

Open section has a
guaranteed minimum of $650 prize fund
What: This tournament is an open event with
an OPEN section, an under 1400 section and a junior only under 800 section.
There will be prize money for the top three in the open and under 1400 section
as well as prize money for the top under 2000, and top under 1800 player
in the open section.. There will also be prizes for the top three U800
player and for the top U1400 junior.
When: The tournament is a six round swiss,
CFC rated, and
will take place from January 2-4, 2004. Round 1 : Jan. 2 at 9:00am, Round 2 on
the same day at 1:30 pm , Round 3 on the same day at 6:30 pm with rounds 4 and 5
on January 3 at 10:00 am and 3:00pm and round 6 on January 4 at 9:00am.
Time Control: 30/90 minutes, 45/game

Where: The tournament will be held at the
Quality Hotel and Conference Centre at 3828 Macleod Trail South, Calgary,
Alberta.
Entry Fee: Entry fees should be payable to the
Southern Alberta Chess Association and mailed to 443 Riverdale Ave. SW Calgary,
Alberta T2S 0X8. Entry fee is open section, all players $50, u1400 $35 for
non-juniors, $25 for juniors, and $25 u800 if RECEIVED by November 30 and $75.00 for both
sections after November 30 until December 20. Entries after December 20 accepted
at the discretion of organiser - NO onsite registration EXCEPT for blitz/bug
which will be 6 - 6:30pm January 1.
Accommodations: The Quality Hotel is offering
a rate of
$69.00/night /single or double plus taxes and has a restaurant, gift shop,
lounge, indoor pool and Jacuzzi. There is a Tim Horton and a McDonalds next door
as well as a Willy's Hamburger , Taco Time and 7 -11 within a 5 minute
walk. The hotel is a 5 minute drive from downtown and 5 minutes from
Chinook Centre, the largest mall in Calgary. Please contact the hotel directly

Transportation: There is a hotel shuttle to and
from the airport. Busses run on Macleod Trail and the LRT is behind the hotel.
Side Events: There will be a bughouse or blitz on
January 1 at 7:00pm - entry fee $5.00.
