Big Buddy Bert October 2005
|
Buddy Bert when he first came to my home. |
Buddy Bert on the day he went to his new home. |
Big Buddy Bert was found September 2005 emaciated and weak, locked in a shed (accidently and nobody knows for how long) around the Boundary Road, South Market area in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. A kind woman took him home, cared for him for a month, but since her husband was severely allergic, he ended up at my home while recuperating until his owner could be found. I had seen the ad in SooToday for help since the woman did not want to bring him to the local shelter. Being in the state he was in, he may have "met his maker" as she put it. I thought I could help and figured that If his owner did not show up within the next month, once he gained his strength back, I could help him find a home through posting and networking. He was in very rough shape, scared, starving and is very thin. He needed food, and ate a whole large can of cat food - Friskees Chicken Pate, daily. I fed him as much as he wanted just to get him going. As he gained confidence, he would put his paws up to my shoulders and lick my chin, loving to be petted. I have a large cage in my rec room which I confined him to until I could assess him and he could get comfortable in his surroundings. He must have been traumatized because he was very happy to stay in his big cage on a comfy pillow while he gained strength. After being pampered and fed he loved to curl up on his pillow. He appeared to be about 6 years old, mostly white with a grey cap on his head, a dab of light caramel behind his ears, black spots on parts of his body, and he has a distinctive white tip on the end of his black tail. He was so very gentle and laid back, had very good grooming habits, seemed to not be fearful of the dogs and cats at my house. He may have been missing from someone's house for quite awhile and not eaten, therefore was thinner than usual judging by his condition and the size of his frame.
I posted his photo with a writeup in Soonet, SooToday, LTV Classifieds and had no enquiries about a lost cat. Meantime, Bert was quite comfortable in my home in the meantime. A few people were interested in him when they read his story, so I kept in contact with some of them to keep them updated. It was time for Bert to go for a vet visit for an assessment so that I could let him run around in the house with my other cats. I felt that if I was going to find him a home, he needed to have a vet check. I brought him to Dr. Karl Boyer on Tilley Road. The vet looked Bert over while he quietly laid on the table while he was poked and prodded, causing no fuss at all. The only thing he did was cry in the cat carrier when I brought him outside which tells me he is afraid of outdoors where he was traumatized.
This is what the vet determined:
He had come a long way from when the woman plucked him starving and unable to walk from the shed. Along with gaining weight, Big Buddy Bert has gained confidence. This affectionate fellow who likes hugging and licking faces had waited long enough, so, after mulling over the people who were interested in him, he is now in a great new home where he will get all the pampering he deserves.
This wonderful cat brought a lot to our home and it was very hard to part with him, believe me. I was prepared to keep him here if the right kind of family wasn't found after his owners never materialized. He needed a home that would appreciate all he has been through and give him the love, care and respect he deserves. The right home came along.
Thanks to the caring people who offered Bert a home after all he has been through. He is a sweetheart.
