Garden Rules and Regulations

The garden area is land owned by the Canadian Red cross that has been leased to the Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society for the benefit of the Allard Street Community Garden membership.

To ensure satisfactory use of the garden area, garden policies have been implemented.

Plot Registration and Maintenance

The garden plot measures 10'x5' and is available for $20 per yearAccess to water, power and access to the Community Tool Shed is provided. Each garden plot will be assigned a number to distinguish garden plots.

Plot registration begins September 1st with preference given to gardeners who currently have beds, have met all of their membership requirements and have indicated that they wish to renew their plots.  Those who currently do not have a bed, but indicate they are interested in renting one will be placed on a waiting list.  There is a limit of one plot per member and the plots are assigned on a first come, first served basis.

Your Plot must be fully planted by June 15th.  A garden participant who has not worked his or her plot will receive a waning letter to which they must respond to within 7 days.  Any plots left unattended (overgrown weeds, unharvested produce, etc.) for more than two weeks will be reassigned and your plot fee will not be refunded.  If you plan to be out of town and need help watering or harvesting, please contact the Garden Coordinator or make arrangements with a neighboring gardener.  this rule will be strictly enforced as there is a large waiting list of interested gardeners!

Payment of membership fee is necessary before you begin gardening and should be submitted with your completed registration form.  keys for the front gate/garden shed are available from the Garden Coordinator upon payment of a $2 deposit to cover costs and/or replacements.

The Allard Street Community Garden is committed to the use of organic gardening practices.  This means that all chemical herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers are banned from use in the garden.  Please consult the bulletin board inside the garden shed for a list of approved products and consult the Garden Coordinator if you have any questions.  All members will be provided with a Garden Handbook and will be provided with educational sessions dealing with the organic control of weeds, insect pests and disease.

You must attend one of the Garden Registration meetings, contribute a minimum of 8 hours to community garden maintenance which includes attending at 2 of the scheduled Work Parties and participate in the Fall Clean-up and Garden Closing.  All site maintenance is performed by you and your fellow gardeners and every member must share in the work load.  Attendance will be recorded on the signup sheets provided at each Work Bee and Social. We will discuss the principles of organic gardening, composting, water conservation, mulching and the proper use of tools.

Each gardener is expected to sign up and be active on at least one garden committee!

No member can give a garden plot away!  Plots that are not renewed become available to the next individual signed up on the waiting list.  All present plot holders who wish to trade or change their allotted site must register their request with the Garden Coordinator.
