Anne Raver once stated,
“Gardens, scholars say, are the first sign of commitment to a community. When
people plant corn
they
are saying, let’s stay here. And by their connection to the land, they are
connected to one another.”
Most of us would agree
to that sentiment. As gardeners, we commit each and every time we plant a
seed or seedling. We commit to watering, weeding and
nurturing each plant to maturity. As a Horticultural Society member, we
commit each and every time we plant a garden in our
community. We commit to sharing our resources, our expertise, and our time
to building a sense of community. By digging
in, we help to make the Sault a better and more beautiful place to live in.
We can be proud of our
accomplishments especially in 2004! Our members contributed generously towards
the successful development of the
Allard Street Community Garden.
We spring plant and
prepare the soils at the community gardens such as the
United Way, the Rose Memorial Gardens at the Finnish Rest Home and Bellevue
Park, and various other sites. We continue to help plant annuals at the famous
lighted Cross located behind St. Basil’s High
School.
To support our work in
the community, we have carried out very successful spring and fall bulb
fundraising campaigns and held the most profitable plant
sale. We wish to applaud all the numerous organizations, local businesses and
individuals who have donated plants, materials,
services and manual labour towards our community projects.
Our Society and
volunteers tirelessly support the
City Beautification Program.
We have assisted the
Communities in Bloom Committee to promote balcony and community
gardening and outdoor beautification throughout our city. Examples
can be seen by planters and hanging baskets in several housing projects such as
the Chapple Street and Second Line housing
units.
We host a Children’s
Gardening Program at the Allard Street Community Garden that is very well
attended by neighbourhood children inspiring many to
continue on their own after the summer program has ended.
To support our members,
we offer a stimulating program that combines educational speakers, “hands-on”
activities, a community garden tour and an entertaining
Garden Party. We have been blessed with fabulous weather and good turnouts at
our annual Flower and Vegetable Shows. We
also offered a Photography competition in November.
NEWS IN BLOOM,
continues to circulate horticultural information, upcoming events and
opportunities for volunteering in our community to our current
membership. Special thanks to the local and area businesses who participated in
our DISCOUNTS PROGRAM which offers our
members considerable savings on gardening products and to those who sponsored
our Flower and Vegetable Show competition.
The Sault
Ste. Marie Horticultural Society continues to involve itself and its members in
projects to not only promote the universal passion
for gardening, but also to benefit the Sault community as a whole.
