Jody Davis | Jody Davis | Pamplin |  ½

First came the catchy, yet simplistic and repetitive, solo release from Newsboys' bassist Phil Joel. Now Jody Davis, guitarist for the Newsboys, has released his own solo project. The self-titled album is a blend of classic and folk rock, with a few jazz interludes. With the exception of the odd line or two, Jody Davis is strong lyrically, with songs that are deep and insightful. Unfortunately, there's two fairly major problems on this album: one, Davis' voice won't appeal to everyone, as it gets rather raw and scratchy at times; and two, the songs have a tendency to sound too much alike. All in all Jody Davis is a pretty good debut album, and kudos to Davis for releasing an album done in a style that is different from that of his band, the Newsboys.
