TobyMac's Momentum,
the third and final album in the dc Talk solo series, is stylistically
reminiscent of the early days of dc Talk, but with a more modern sound
of course. The album combines two main styles, hip hop and rapcore. The
hip hop style is catchy, and can be pulled off very well ("In the Air",
"Somebody's Watchin"), but is definitely too cheesy and is overly produced,
making it too poppy, and quality seems to be sacrificed for widespread
appeal. The rapcore is definitely the better style, with "Momentum", "Yours"
and "In the Air" being by far the best songs on the album. Latin beats
and a little bit of funk ("J Train") are also used, as well as an all star
cast of producers and musicians, including Pete Stewart, Tait, Dan Mukala,
Adrienne Liesching, DJ Maj and Otto Price, to name a few. Though his rap/hip
hop/rapcore style is highly inferior to true artists in the genre, fans
of light, radio-friendly hip hop will enjoy Momentum.
