VANCOUVER — Conservative cabinet minister Gary Lunn has been re-elected in
the Saanich-Gulf Islands riding despite a campaign to "shun Lunn."
Lunn will serve a fifth term representing the B.C. riding, where
vote-splitting has played a role in the past with the Liberals, Greens and NDP
combined traditionally receiving more votes than Lunn.
This time around, left-of-centre voters were encouraged to “shun Lunn” and
vote Liberal after New Democrat candidate Julian West withdrew early in the
election after admitting to inappropriate actions during a skinny-dipping
incident years ago.
West’s name remained on the ballot because he withdrew after nominations
closed and he received hundreds of votes.
Lunn was first elected to Parliament in 1997 as a member of the Reform Party
and became Natural Resources Minister in 2006.
