BONAR FAMILY (from personal notes of Edith Bonar Amos) Robert Edward Bonar was born in Norwood, Ontario in 1861. As a young man he found work with the Great Northern Railway (possibly as a scout) and spent some time in Montana. He gained a reputation as quite a good boxer through competitions in the railway workcamps. He came north again to homestead in Kelso, Sask. in 1883 and there married Annie McLeod. Their first two children were born in Kelso. In 1888 they bought their farm in High View district, where they built a log home and raised a family of nine children. The Bonar home was one of love, kindness, friendship, and happiness. The door was always open with a welcome mat, a cheery "Hello, Come on in," to relatives, friends and neighbours from all districts and towns from Moosomin, Kelso, and Wawota. There was a small lake near their home and in winter the boys kept a clear place well shovelled for skating. Most of the family learned to skate and the District young people came nearly twice a week for skating and a social evening with lunch. Other evenings the family had their usual good time. Dad, coming from Ontario, step danced and sang Eastern songs. Mother sang in Gaelic and English and also danced the Highland Fling. A cousin, Herb Parker, played the violin, two of the girls took turns chording on the piano. All this helped everyone forget the cold winters. There was a history to the Bonar's piano. It was ordered and shipped to Fred Dean of Wapella Sask. and after a few years he sold it to Dad (about 1907). The piano was a Crassen Golden Oak upright baby grand. Herb Parker said "Nowhere in the world was there a piano with a tone like it." It was very heavy, but we girls pushed it from one corner to another when changing the furniture. Dad said "Some day I'll come in and find my girls in the middle of the floor underneath the piano." He didn't, and we all stayed upright! The piano now graces the home of Richard Brown in Windthorst, Sask., Viola and Henry Taylor's daughter and the granddaughter of R.E. Bonar. The Bonar name will be carried on by Gerry Bonar's sons, Dr. Gordon Bonar's sons and the sons of the Bonars in Portland Oregon, USA. The name H. Bonar in older hymn books was Rev. Horatius Bonar of Scotland, a great-uncle to R.E. Bonar. Most of the Bonar family were brought into the world by Dr. Fred Hilts, of Kennedy. Annie McLeod Bonar was a midwife and often went out with Dr. Hilts to assist with his patients. The Bonar home had a photo of Captain Baden-Powell, the Founder of the Boy Scouts. He lived in a cabin half way between Bonar's farm and Kenosee (Fish Lake) and visited in the District. He was a forest ranger and a good friend of Dad and Mother.
