Presentations
Shelley focuses her school and library presentations on the value of perseverance. She describes the pitfalls she encountered on her path to becoming a published author. She discusses where ideas come from using examples from her books, and how they change and develop as the writing process develops and she touches on numerous literary devices, depending on the age of the audience. Shelley also reads from some of her many rejections letters - the part of her presentation the students seem to like the most!
A former teacher, Shelley feels very much at home in the classroom. She is available for school and library presentations for Grades 4 - 12.
Comments/Quotes
“I thoroughly enjoyed watching the energy and creativity from everyone in the workshop. Once again you gave the participants a very unique and amazing experience. The sharing comes, at least in part, from the comfort you create in the room. My sense from the group was that each grew in their writing that morning and were very happy to be part of the event.” Linda Irvine, Bookfest: the Vancouver Island Children‘s Book Festival
“The presentations you and Diane gave to our classes last Thursday were excellent. Since then all of your books have been taken out and I have a long waiting list for many of them as well. I‘m planning on buying extra copies this week to satisfy our students‘ eagerness for them.
The student, teachers and principal have all told me that they really enjoyed the way you and Diane gave your presentation. The ‘tag team‘ approach kept things lively and held the students‘ attention. I noticed that the students were very focused during the entire hour.” Nancy Gauthier, Teacher-librarian, Mount Slesse Middle School
„I, along with the teachers present, felt that your presentation was excellent - full of interesting information and exactly the right level for grades 6 & 7. The kids were obviously very keen, and as I mentioned, all copies of your books are checked out.“ Alison Campbell, Librarian, North Vancouver District Public Library
„Thank you for coming and giving us your time to tell us about your interesting and soon-to-be-famous books. Your presentation was an A++ and I would and will read your books.“
-Tristan Peterson, student, Hellings Elementary School
„The students certainly learned a lot from you. Your message about perseverance and determination to accomplish your goals was a very important one. It was great to have someone from the ‚real world‘ stress this point!“
-Karen Rice, Grade 7 teacher, Serpentine Heights Elementary School.
