Most of downtown's signals are the Style 2 variety; this is the very basic design that is used. Most signals in the downtown area are 8-inch, although there are a few 12-inch lights (both Styles 2 and 3) to be found. There may be lane movement signs (for example,
and
) on the arm, and if the cross street is a one-way street as well, there will be a one-way sign (for example,
) centred between the signal heads. Some intersections have vertical auxiliary signals above the pedestrian signals, installed in the late 1990s. A significant difference between downtown traffic lights and the rest of the city is that the lights turn yellow once the don't walk stops flashing. The downtown core was among the first regions in Calgary to undergo the LED retrofit, between June and August 2003 (red, green, and pedestrian signals).
