The 8-8-8 assembly is used only on minor roads and in downtown; 12-inch signals are used otherwise. No new 8-inch installations use arrows; if an arrow is necessary then 12-inch signals will be used (the city of Calgary does not use combination signals (e.g. 12-8-8s) except for traffic crossing the C-Train lines in the downtown core). An auxiliary 8-8-8 signal appears on the left side using the same guidelines as for a 12-12-12 assembly.
