With this style (both 12-inch and 8-inch signals), horizontal signal heads were now level with the mast arm, as opposed to being positioned below as they were previously, and backplates were used for the first time. The first backplates used on 12-inch signals were (in my opinion, unnecessarily) large, with rounded corners. Again, this animation is inaccurate with regard to the pedestrian signals, because symbols were not used yet.
