The signals at this intersection were changed sometime near the end of 2002 because of the construction of the new Crowchild Trail/40 Avenue/Brisebois Drive interchange just a stone's throw away. Originally, east/west traffic operated in split phase, with 3M PV signals on the eastbound approach, so as not to confuse drivers at the Crowchild Trail intersection. When the signals were changed to accommodate the new interchange, north/south became split phase and both eastbound and westbound traffic saw this configuration, but with a protected-prohibited left turn signal (as well, all LED signals were used). Later on though, the protected-prohibited signals were changed to protected-permitted, and the eastbound overhead signal was changed from the R-R-Y-G signal seen here, to the standard 2 R-Y-G signals. What you see here is what westbound traffic currently sees at this intersection. This is basically an example of the single through lane assembly higher up on the index page, with a protected-permitted left turn signal. There are pictures of the initial post-interchange setup on this page (2nd last and 4th last pictures) at Julian Macdonald's Alberta Roads pages.
