As this page will show, I am a fan of a wide variety of sports. If you read my me page, you know my favorites are hockey, Canadian football, and NCAA basketball, but I'll watch just about anything athletic. I'm a fairly big fan of all of Calgary's major sports teams: the Flames, Stampeders, Cannons, Hitmen, Storm, Roughnecks, and of course, the University of Calgary Dinos. If you have ever seen a Flames game, you will recognize the fireballs; every time the Flames score a huge fireball like the ones you see here shoots up above each end of the rink, sending a wave of heat through the Saddledome. Pretty awesome! But enough yapping; here are the links.

Everybody who knows anything about me knows that I am a huge Calgary Flames fan. The 2003-2004 season started with the Flames getting a brand new blazing red home jersey, and ended with the whole city catching Flames fever as they surpassed everybody's expectations, making it within one game of winning the Stanley Cup!

National Hockey League - the NHL website was voted #1 among all professional sports websites. Here you can get stats, scores, and other good stuff concerning your favorite team. My playoff scoreboard is up and running and can be found here.

2002 Olympic Winter Games - Salt Lake City, USA, February 8-24, 2002. The XIX Winter Olympics took place close to home, continuing the legacy that passed through Calgary 14 years ago. Powder the hare, Copper the coyote, and Coal the bear were the mascots, symbolizing the Olympic motto "Faster, Higher, Stronger".

Congratulations Vancouver!
Host city of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games

FIFA World Cup 2002, May 31-June 30, 2002 - the most-watched sporting competition in the world went for another round, as 32 countries did battle for soccer's ultimate championship. France didn't do a terribly good job defending its title, while teams like Senegal and South Korea made surprising but impressive runs deep into the final stages. I have my scoreboard for this one too, right here.

Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League - the 2004 football season has begun, with the Stampeders looking to avenge the horrible season last year. This year the grey Cup game will be in Ottawa on November 21. GO STAMPS GO!
Not familiar with Canadian rules? Well here are some of the major differences from the (ugh!) NFL:

  • 3 downs to make 10 yards, not 4
  • 12 players per team on the field, not 11
  • 110 yard field, not 100 (i.e. the middle line is the 55, not the 50)
  • end zones are 20 yards deep, not 10, and goalposts are at the front, not the back
  • a punt or missed FG not returned out of the receiving team's end zone scores 1 point for the kicking team (called a rouge)
  • no fair catch rule; 5-yard "no yards" penalty if a member of the kicking team is within 5 yards when the ball is fielded
  • 20 second play clock, not 40
  • at the line of scrimmage the defense must line up 1 yard from the ball
  • only 1 time out per team per half
  • motion is allowed in the backfield before the snap
  • shootout style overtime: each team gets one drive to score from their opponents' 35-yard line, with no game clock; after each team has had a drive, if one team is ahead then they win by that score, otherwise another overtime is played (during the regular season if the score is still tied after 2 drives per team then the game ends in a tie)
  • wider field (65 yards instead of 50)
  • bigger balls (hehehe!)
All you NFL fans, give the CFL a chance and you'll see just how good it really is!

The Calgary Stampeders Fan Page - I wouldn't normally put a link to a personal fan page here, but this fan certainly did a impressive job on his, which is why it is here. The only bad part about the page is that it hasn't been updated in close to 2 years. Of particular note on this page is a near-complete list of the differences between Canadian and American rules.

If you read the page about me, you know that I am a basketball referee. Here are links to the refereeing and basketball associations for Canada, Alberta, and Calgary:

GO DINOS! University of Calgary Dinos - what university student doesn't cheer for the home team? I'm a member of the Dinos' event staff so I am there almost all of the Dinos home games, be they football, soccer, volleyball, or basketball, which means that many times I was there to see them kick some serious ass. I'm also the person who best knows how to work the scoreboard in the gym, including the scorekeepers

Canadian Interuniversity Sport - analagous to the NCAA south of the border, the CIS (formerly CIAU) is the governing body of university athletics in Canada, composed of the Canada West, Ontario, Québec, and Atlantic conferences.

Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League - junior league hockey ranking among the best in the world. 1999 WHL Champions and Memorial Cup Finalists, the Hitmen are part of the Western Hockey League, which is the western division of the Canadian Hockey League.

Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League - apparently this league has been around for quite some time, but nobody ever heard anything about it until the Toronto Rock started making noise a few years ago. Now the NLL is in an expansion boom, with teams from Calgary (Roughnecks), Vancouver (Ravens), Montréal (Xpress), and New Jersey (Storm) joining for the 2001-2002 season.

Calgary Cannons of the Pacific Coast League (AAA). Unfortunately, after 18 seasons in Calgary, the Cannons moved to Albuquerque after the 2002 season. That sounds like a Simpsons episode doesn't it? But wait, it gets better... the new Albuquerque team is called the Isotopes. I was there September 2, 2002 to see the last few innings in Cannons history, and saw the Guns score a spectacular 9th inning come-from-behind victory against the Edmonton Trappers. They had tied the score 13-13, 2 out, Matt Erickson on second base with Kevin Hooper at the plate. On the 2-2 pitch, Hooper swung and missed for strike 3, but the catcher missed as well, and his throw to first was low, allowing Hooper to reach safely. Meanwhile, Erickson was flying around third, and was able to cross home with the winning run... YAY!

NCAA Basketball Championships - March 14 was Selection Sunday for the 2004 edition of March Madness, and within 12 hours I had my big scoreboard ready to go. This year's Final Four will take place in San Antonio, Texas, with the winner being crowned on April 5. You can also see summaries of the 2003 and 2002 tournaments.

Indiana's Game - Indiana University basketball - as far as I'm concerned, the best basketball comes out of the NCAA; the NBA doesn't even come close as far as excitement goes. My favorite NCAA team is the Indiana Hoosiers, partially due to... heavy influence, hehehe The Hoosiers did very well in 2002, making a brilliant run to the NCAA Championship game, after having disposed of Duke, ranked #1 nationally, and Oklahoma, ranked #3, thanks in part to spectacular 3-point shooting. Unfortunately the 2-point shooting was far from perfect in the final game against Maryland, and Indiana came up on the short end.
