In support of the victims, and their families and friends, of the terrorist attacks in the United States

September 11, 2001

3 minutes of silence...

The events of September 11 rocked not just the United States, but the world, like never before. Time seemed to stand still as people around the globe stayed glued to their TVs, watching the events unfold. September 14 was declared a National Day of Mourning in Canada, as in the United States and European Union, to remember the victims, and many local as well as national ceremonies were held. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathy to all those who were affected by the attacks, and praise all the rescue workers and their undying hope of finding one more person still living....

"It is impossible to fully comprehend the evil that would have conjured up such a cowardly and depraved assault upon thousands of innocent people. There can be no cause or grievance that could ever justify such unspeakable violence. Indeed, such an attack is an assault not only on the targets but an offense against the freedom and rights of all civilized nations. ... [I offer,] on behalf of all Canadians, our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and to the American people."

- Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, 09/11/2001
