"Count your blessings" (see below) is one of my favourite songs, because counting blessings is such a helpful thing to do, especially when, as happens, we're struggling with some of the hard things, and tend to forget the good things. Here are some blessings I like to remember. New ones keep coming to my attention. What would be in your list of blessings??

  • Family – Selma, m'love, my wife – my two 30-something children -- my grandaughter "Becca". And more. They're always there, in my mind, and bringing a smile on my face!

  • Nature – I happen to live under a large sky, near ocean and mountains, where tall trees and colourful flowers abound -- and they always lift up my feelings.

  • Each new day – I should have been dead several times, but here I am, and appreciating every day as a gift to enjoy and to do something worthwhile with.

  • Dear, good people – There are lots of them, and some of them are friends. It's wonderful to know they're there.

  • Enough to live on – In fact, compared with other centuries, we live like kings and queens! It's a blessing not to have to worry where the next meal will come from. (And a challenge, too, to be responsible with all we have.)

  • Hope – Bad things can turn around, goodness can arise again and again, and even death may prove a dear friend when the time for it is right.

  • Retirement – a fairly new one for me, with the burden of work behind, the opportunity to take more time at worthwhile tasks, and for lots of fun too.

  • Health Care – a new pace-maker was waiting for me when the battery on my first one ran low, and my mechanical heart valve pumps loudly along. Can't beat that!

  • Quiet – It's nice to be up at night or at a spot away from traffic and just hear the silence. Quiet seems to silence any turmoil in my soul.

  • Freedom – It's good to know I can criticize a disliked (or frightening!) politician, or complain about some flaw in the system, without worrying that someone will come after me for saying what I think.

So, what would you put in your list of blessings?

Here's the song I mentioned. You can see all the words, and hear the music too, by Googling for "Count your Blessings".

When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one ,
and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
