Seeds of Hope

The hospital

Seeds of Hope is based at Rodolfo Robles hospital - one of only two public hospitals that treat TB patients in Guatemala. Located in Quetzaltenango in the western highlands, the hospital caters for the whole of southern Guatemala as well as parts of eastern Mexico. It specializes in pulmonary disease and has a large number of patients infected with HIV.

All treatment and meals are free so the hospital attracts the 'poorest of the poor' (as defined by the UN). However, patients may have to buy drugs and tests that are not available at the hospital. HIV treatment is not provided.

Attached to the hospital is an external clinic that provides low-cost TB testing.

It is important for Seeds of Hope to dissolve some of the myths which prevent people seeking help. Hospitals are often regarded with suspicion in Guatemala and many people are reluctant to come for treatment, believing they will not leave alive. Literacy and languages barriers can further this problem.
