Seeds of Hope

Hands in Action

Hands in Action began at the beginning of 2003, as a way for the patients to earn a little money while at the hospital. Patients enjoy making crafts and feel a sense of achievement about the bracelets and pens they produce. Patients are taught new crafts by a volunteer coordinator who then sells the products on their behalf. Foreigners and Guatemalans alike are happy to buy Seeds of Hope crafts with the knowledge that they are not only quality goods, but also helping improve the quality of life of AIDS and TB patients.

The activities increase the sense of community amongst patients, who may live in the hospital for as long as a year. A patient’s self-confidence grows as s/he learns new skills that can be used outside the hospital. They may be able to make more producing these crafts than they can in the fields.

Patient Emergency Fund
Although treatment and food at the hospital is free, patients have a lot of financial needs. They may need money to pay for tests or treatment that the hospital can't provide, to pay for their journey home, or to give some financial support to family back home (they may be the primary source of income). All Hands in Action profits go towards the emergency fund to help patients with those needs.
