Cardinals re-sign TE Chris Gedney TEMPE, Ariz. (Feb. 23, 2000) -- Tight end Chris Gedney, who missed the 1999 season while undergoing two major intestinal surgeries, re-signed with the Arizona Cardinals, the team announced. Second on the depth chart to Johnny McWilliams in 1998, Gedney was cut on July 30 after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. He later underwent two procedures and dropped from 257 pounds to 215 before returning to his playing weight. "Chris has made a remarkable recovery from a serious, oftentimes debilitating condition," said Dr. Wayne Kuhl, a Cardinals team physician. "His return to the NFL will serve as an inspiration to others who are suffering from colitis or Crohn's Disease." According to the team, the 6-5 Gedney could become the first professional athlete to return to action following such procedures. Gedney, 29, had 22 receptions for 271 yards and a touchdown in 1998, his second season with Arizona. He has 73 catches for 839 yards and eight scores since being selected by Chicago in the third round of the 1993 draft. The former Syracuse standout missed all of 1996 with a broken foot.
