Giraffe Dreams for Connor

This baby quilt is for my niece's new baby Connor, born November 2001. I broke the rules and used some silky fake fur down the right hand side and on one of the hearts on the left. The centre background is flannel, and the rest cotton, so there are a variety of textures and colours. I have been collecting the animal skin fabrics for awhile and loved working with them. This is a colour palette that feels natural to me. I love the narrow yellow strip with what look like black dots in the picture, but what are really perfect little black ants. The little kokopelli guys along the bottom are quilted with swirls coming out of their flutes to give a sense of motion and enhance their dance. The top border is quilted with stars and the bottom border with waves.

Gin's Bodhran Case

My friend Ginette, pictured here with her drum case, had a significant birthday in August 2001 and I wanted to make her something special. She plays the Bodhran, an Irish frame drum, so I made her a case for it with a celtic design. The knot work is done in green and purple, though it looks blue here. Thanks to Josie from my guild who just happened to have the perfect Ginny Byer border fabric for the side of the case. Gin's daughter is teaching me to play celtic fiddle so I'm in a celtic mood all around.

"Abygayle's Lullaby"

This is a baby quilt for my nephew's first daughter, born in May 2001. This quilt has a hand appliqued center and machine peiced borders. It is hand quilted.

I woke up in the middle of the night with the jester in the moon stuck in my head, and thought this would be a cute center for Abby's quilt. I drew up a design and didn't realize that I probably got the idea from Lora Rockf's book "LORA & COMPANY" until I noticed it on the library table at my guild this week. Lora also has a Jester in a crescent moon. Her's is fishing for stars, while mine is playing a mandolin, but the quilt on the book cover obviously made an impression at some point. As is usual for me, the design grew itself from the center out.

The colours aren't showing up very well on this scanned photo. The inner top and bottom borders are more of a magenta, and the narrow outer borders are multi-coloured stripes. I used some pink satin for the binding.
