I was invited to create a garment for the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters travelling wearable art show. The 2000-2002 show theme is "Bed and Breakfast" and the garments will be displayed at brunch fashion shows in various cities throughout the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada until the Quiltfest in Seattle in 2002 at which time they will be auctioned. (See the APNQ Page for schedules and tickets).
I was thrilled to participate and found coming up with something interesting and theme related was a real challenge. I always associate "Bed and Breakfast" with lovely Victorian houses with window seats and stained glass. Stained glass to me is Tiffany and Co. and Tiffany always reminds me of Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffanys" and so that's how my kimono ended up as "Breakfast at Tiffany's". I would like to be able to say that using a kimono instead of a housecoat was symbolic of East meeting West reflecting the multi-cultural nature of the Lower Mainland of BC, or something equally lofty, but the truth is that I felt that a kimono would a) require less fabric (this was being donated, after all), and b) make a better canvas for my design. Anyway...here is the finished kimono. Thank you Elspeth, for modelling.
