The poem, “To My Son, Concerning Your Birth Mother,” was written upon
the arrival of my son, Jacob, for his adoption at the age of three months.
I did not want my beautiful child to ever feel that he was in any way
unwanted or unloved because his birth mother made an adoption choice for him.
On the contrary, adoption is not about not wanting a child. It is everything
about wanting the best for a child to whom you cannot offer the best.
It is a selfless realization that, while the baby is on its way, the parent
is not in a position yet to be a parent. It is, beyond question, the most
difficult choice a birth mother could ever make.
