The Victoria Family Court and Youth Justice Committee consists of an executive committee—Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, and Past Chair. Chairpersons for each of seven sub-committees and active ad hoc committees together with the executive create a Steering Committee. Funding is granted by the Capital Regional District (Bylaws Nos. 2560, 2590, 2795) in response to annual budget submissions. Sub-committees:
Concerned with issues that are handled under legislation relating to family: The Family and Child Service Act, which is administered by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and the Family Relations Act, administered by the Ministry of the Attorney General.
Concerned with matters involving youth at risk or in the court system. Section 69 of Bill C-61, Young Offender’s Act, establishes youth justice committees targeting problems and services.
Concerned with monitoring any matters pertaining to youth or family in the court system.
Concerned with the operations of the Youth Custody Centre.
Responsible for bringing community youth issues and resources to the attention of members and for promoting Committee initiatives in the community.
Responsible for assessing petitions for support of appropriate youth initiatives in the community and making recommendations to the Committee for consideration.
Responsible for assessing and educating the public in this specific area of youth at risk. |
