The Speakeasy

March 29th/2001

This was a special benefit show on the 29th of March.  A lot of different elements made it special for me.  The show had a very mellow vibe and that could be partly due to the fact that Spencer was not feeling well.  His beautifully pained lyrics were sung just that much more painfully.  Poor thing, what a trooper.  Brannen played a special drum kit called a "Cocktail Drum Kit".  He stood while playing.  That must have been cool to see.

Stewart gave some very supportive singing on this show.  I'm sure that it helped take some pressure off of Spencer : ).

That night, 50% of the sales of this cd were donated to the cause.*

Julie's review here!

* "Bands perform to benefit kids at Rawson-Saunders School.  Several popular bands and the club Speakeasy are joining forces to raise funds for Austinšs only school that provides academic excellence for dyslexic children. All of the bands and the club are donating their time and resources, ensuring 100% of ticket proceeds go to help the school."

"Early Warning" - What can I say?  I love the :54 Speakeasy shows!  I love this song, always.  'Nuff said.

"Jaded" - Ooh, nice and slow.  You won't hear any screams on this one (Spencer can't).  Love the up-tempo waltzy vibe.

"Nashville" - "This is a tune called Nashville" - I wait for that every time and Spencer always delivers.  Such a treat to hear him introduce this song in his cool accent.  And the song ain't half bad either!  Almost a comedic drum fill from Brannen at the end - very cool...

"You Are Not Me" - "And I could be someone" - can it get any prettier?

"Foolish Me" - Whoa, stand out performance.  Love the new creepy intro from Stewart.  Nice guitar from Spencer and prominent bass from Glenn.  Some great harmony singing (even some three part harmony!).  Brannen, as always, RULES!

"Poppyseed" - Yeah... this one never changes, thank the sweet whatever.  Reel me in emotion from Spencer.  Classic Spencer guitar effects.  Everyone compliments each other, completely gels.  In your face sexy bass.

"Strange Day" - Cool effects from Stewart.  Almost "Ballroom Blitz" like.  This song is always 54 Seconds completely rockin' out!
