Akamai Registered Rottweilers
Our Dogs Working
Herding Although our exposure to sheep is limited, we sure do love the chance to get our dogs out to try their paws at herding. Hopefully in the next few years we will be able to really dig into the dirt and get involved in some herding trials and show everyone what Rottweilers were really bred to do!
Jewel at her second HIC test in November 2005 In July 2002, Justice passed his herding instinct evaluation to earn the title HIC (herding instinct certified). The evaluator, Jill Brodie, rated him forceful without excess and excited but controllable. He was highly interested in the sheep. Looks like he is following in his mother's paw steps!! In June of 2004, both Jewel and Jager went into the herding ring and, while exhibiting two completely different herding styles (as noted by Mr. Ron Gale, the evaluator), both earned their own herding instinct certifications.
Here is Justice highly involved during his herding instinct test! August 28, 2005, we took 5 puppies from our 'Harry Potter' litter to a herding instinct test here in Calgary. They all did well considering they were not quite 5 months old at the time. Of the 5 pups who were tested, 3 passed (Moka, Wicca and Kira), but I have no doubt that the two (coincidentally the boys, Dax and Parker) will do better when given another chance at the sheep! Before the RCC National Specialty in May 2007 in Chilliwack, BC, we attended a herding instinct test at the home of Shelley Fritzke who is an experienced herding instructor and CKC herding judge.
Here is Dax, Ch. Akamai Rubeus Hagrid TT HIC, earning his HIC in May 2o07 with tester Shelley Fritzke. Both he and Seeker earned this title at this test and did it with excellent remarks and natural herding ability.
In 2004, Jewel and I started tracking. This is a new sport to both of us, although we are familiar with it. Starting off with a dog that has natural drives in tracking is an asset too!!
Here is Seeker tracking, May 2007. We are still actively tracking now with both Jewel and Seeker. At the age of one year and one day in June 2007, Seeker and I did our first tracking trial here in Alberta ..... we did not pass but learned a lot from the experience and can't wait for our next chance at a TD trial!
Carting is a sport that I have never done before and I am very interested in getting started with Jewel. I am taking the advice of a number of different people and starting Jewel off by pulling both a tire and a small toboggan with some weights in it. This was she is getting used to having something behind her. She is also learning the commands I will be using to go ("let's go") and to stop ("whoa"),
Here is Jewel all ready to pull Sarah We have recently purchased a beautiful draft cart and we will soon be starting Jewel on some serious draft work. Hopefully, if all goes well, we will be able to trial Jewel for her DD (Draft Dog) title and maybe even get little Seeker started on some pulling as well.
Here is Caemon pulling Emily in February 2004 at the Newfoundland Club's annual carting extravaganza! Caemon is Aunty Traci's big man and the sire of our 'Harry Potter' Litter. He is formally known as Multi V-Rated Am. Ch/Select Can. Champion Rothburg's Kourage Under Fire ZtP CDX Am. CD DDX BH CS CI HIC CGC but we just love him!! Here are some great carting links to go to to learn more about carting and the equipment and all.
