1974 Corvette Stingray
Beautiful
Now I had $10,000.00 in my pocket, I wanted something really nice but I wasn't too sure of what? I know I had always wanted a Corvette but was afraid to purchase a project because of the shear cost of restoring one but now I had the dough and was ready to use it, I knew I had to act fast too because my wife was eyeing up this wad and making plans for weddings and stuff (yikes) time to get this show on the road!
Being a tightwad I tried to go the cheapest route and still manage to save myself a few bucks in the process so I could have a few spare bucks to spruce up the car! My buddy and I went Vette hunting and were shocked at what we found! I never knew that people could or would let a Corvette fall apart but you'd be surprised, there were more wrecks out there than I would have ever guessed! It soon looked like my Corvette wasn't going to happen until I got a call back from a dealership, one of the salesmen remembered me looking for a Corvette and called me as he was possibly going to take one in on trade!
This is where this crooked salesman made his big mistake, he talked the seller into trying to sell it to me privately and of course a kick back to himself, a kickback of $500.00 from the seller and also tried to squeeze me for an additional $500.00!! Trying to deal from both sides of the deck was revealed when the Vette owner and me went for a drive together in the car and when we learned what was really up we struck another deal on the side, $10,500.00 and the car was mine! I left his house that day saying I would think about it but all I could think about was getting that car the very next day and that's just what I did!
The Vette was fun, I got a quickie paint job on it just to spruce up the minor parking lot dings and so forth, put in some new door panels and carpet and was pretty much done! I kept the car for about a year and only really used it a few times, I made a 1,000.00 mile trek across the country and a short three hour trip with my wife for a weekend get away, other than that the car pretty much sat! I am a father of two small kids and a husband, I work from home and when I go most places my family usually comes along for the ride, we weren't getting much use of this car and as nice as it was, it had to go. I'll always remember this car, it was a great car to drive, nice to look at and was very reliable as well as pretty quick, not fast but quick. I sold the Vette and bought a 1992 Ford Explorer and swore off cars forever, just me, my Explorer and an old beater truck I bought to bomb around town in the winter. Unfortunately my beater turned into...........you guessed it my next project!
