Muffler Science-
I scoured catalogues at the local John Deere dealer for a muffler and came up with a decent replacement. Resonably priced.
I had to replace the section of pipe from the 1" 90 deg elbow off the motor. Visit the local plumber, they will have chunk big enough for your purpose. 1" cold rolled, threaded on one end. Get 14 inches or so, cut it down when you start fabricating. You will need some flat stock as well for the front support. Do not use automotive muffler hanger, it will not offer enough support and stress the threaded exhaust port on the motor.
It tamed the tecumseh's mushroom muffler's blat to a might authoritive rumble that the Bolen's deserves. It wasn't long enough to get past the hood cowel, so I went to the crome muffler tip store for a small extension.

A learned comment from one of the Yahoo Bolens' club participants-
On a 4 cycle engine back-preasure is not necessary, the less the better, with a short exhaust system one runs the risk of cold air going back through the exhaust port and warping a hot valve in the open position, a short length of pipe will stop this. At a Briggs & Stratton update school a number of years ago a factory rep was asked about mufflers, he stated that as long as the outlet was no smaller than the inlet no harm to the engine would be done. I guess it all comes down to what a person wants and can get away with. (thanks to duomaticolsen)
