I know as seasoned
professionals we expect quality from these
guys, but I struggle to think of a rhythm section as tight and funky as
Dave Bronze
and Pete Thompson, or a vocalist that compliments Robin's playing as well
as
Davey and as for the man himself, being an avid guitar fan,
I can honestly say that
I have never been as inspired
to play the guitar as watching Robin play. The guitar just oozes his musical
feel
and it gives me goose bumps to listen to this band -
I am sure those of you
that saw the show will know what I mean!?
I went to the show loaded
with cash, to buy whatever there was available (and
no, I can’t afford it: I looked at it as the last chance to get anything
of this
criminally overlooked and ignored master musician).
Last saw RT twice in 1980
as a young 18yr old!! at Bristol & Birmingham. He was excellent
then & just as good
this time after all those years.
The band were first class
and it was great to see RT in top form
I've got Trower withdrawal symptoms now... can't get enough.
I hope to see Robin Trower
and his band soon again.
Long may he live, tour
and make great records.
We're all watching for word of a U.S. tour next year.
I was a bit disappointed
that none of the music this band produced in
the 80’s was showcased (especially as they never toured the UK in their
prime
At first I was dubious
about going to a small gig,
standing only. As a new 50yr old (last week), I felt a little old to be
back at a
truly live event such as this. But the minute Robin and the band came on
I realized it was the
best
Having had the opportunity
to renew their partnership, these fine musicians have clearly
revelled in giving so many outstanding performances to so many people in
recent weeks.
I had forgotten what it
was that I first got inspired about,
way back on the For Earth Below tour and subsequent Reading gigs, but the
other night Robin and the band just blew me away once again -
I haven't been mesmerized
like that for years!!
Who couldn't be moved by the show? I left on cloud 9
Robin’s
sweet solo in ‘Rolling Stoned’ is full of sharp staccato snatches
towards its end. Dave Bronze’s lines ebb and flow freely on ‘Daydream’
and ‘Bridge of
Sighs’. Pete crashes through to the next level of pure funk fusion on ‘Come
to me’.
Once again, ‘Another Time, Another Place’ makes its mark. Davey’s blistering
vocal
lines on this song are a joy to behold.
If you're gonna
meet Robin, please tell him that there a lot of fans in
Germany who want to see
him again
And then the moment we've
all been waiting for -
Robin Trower live, back
home in the UK!
This particular line-up,
comprising Robin, Pete, Dave
and Davey, has proved beyond doubt that it can rock.
We gather just outside
the door waiting to get in, some die-hard fans clutching album
sleeves and other relevant
media for signature capture.
Many cannot believe their
luck.
They've chanced upon
a poster, just days earlier,
announcing this quiet
warm-up gig.
After the first number Robin shouted
" Are you alright!",
somebdy a few rows back shouted,
" WE ARE NOW!!!"
The "I wish " comments
Since
this is a site done for and by the fans I have to mention a few things
that were brought up a number of times in reviews, emails, conversations
at the shows that people had. In no way are these meant as criticisms
but they were comments non the less and should be mentioned. They
actually weren't so much negatives as "wish they had of.... " comments
and really show the interest people have in Robin Trower.
The most common comment was regarding the set list and that they "wished"
you would have done more of the older songs. No Time was one song
I heard mentioned allot.
I think
too that the UK crowds were expecting more of what they remembered. The
reactions to the BOS stuff was that familiar reaction to something they
loved. I think it would have been better to do a few less new ones (they
will buy the cd and learn to love them too) but I think the UK fans,
would have enjoyed a few songs from other early releases as that was who
they remembered.
Someone
with the catalogue of songs that Robin has written over the years may not
realize that one of the reasons this tour was so successful was because
a lot of older people remembered you from years ago and wanted to relive
those moments. I was told of a number of people who would never go
to the venues you played at normally but because it was Robin Trower they
wanted to see him again so badly that they made the trip. They wanted
to see and hear what they remembered no matter what.
I know this is difficult for artists to understand as they usually like
to move on and play the new songs but I think given the circumstances of
this tour, the target market would have liked to hear more from different
eras. You have to remember, you have the ability to allow people
to go back to their younger days, a rare gift.
The new
songs are awesome and even better performed live, but consider opening
the list up a bit more for the next shows. I think that while it
would not make any difference to the number of people who will go to the
shows but it will create another level of excitement for your fans.
Song "wishes"
No Time (very well known in the UK and probably the most
requested song I heard that was not played).
Alethea (letting Pete show off a bit) and a great standard from
the early tours.
Fool And Me, Passion, Tear It Up and Lady Love were also
mentioned in conversations
The
other thing I heard a lot of was "I wish there was more stuff to buy"
that there was
not enough
merchandise to buy. I saw a few people walk up to the table, wallets open
, ready to buy everything and anything. A few more items should be considered
like posters, a picture of the band, hats that sort of thing.
I know myself, if the posters had been for sale I would have bought at
least 4 or 5 of that alone.
I would
also suggest you look at recording and releasing the shows as legitimate
"bootlegs".
I have already seen one show on Ebay with some very professional looking
cover work.
I am aware of at least four other recordings that are out there. It will
not take
long for
these to show up. Lots of bands do this. On the ticket have
a web address and
people
will go there to purchase the show they went to see. It doesn't have
to be fancy.
A plain
cover with the show date would work. Don't underestimate this market.
While advertising
is expensive, advertise a bit more. Use the internet to get people to put
up posters
in music and record stores. I had a few people offer to volunteer.
They will
do it because
they believe in the music. Trower fans are like that. Remember that
a lot of people went to numerous shows. Trower-heads if you will.
Middle aged Trower-heads.
Change the
write up that goes to the venues web sites for announcement of the show
by
taking
the reference out of the "white Hendrix" He's not. This is Robin
Trower.
And since this is my story I can't resist having a bit of fun with it so for me personally I would like to hear stuff like For Earth Below and Smile, Caladonia, Hanna, and Go My Way, but from what I have heard I thought I would have some fun and play with the set list ....... and give you my "wish"setlist based on what was said to me.
Too Rolling Stoned
Sweet Angel
Passion or Tear It Up
Living Out Of Time
No Time
Daydream
Alethea
Rise Up Like The Sun
Day Of The Eagle
Bridge Of Sighs
Please Tell Me or What's Your Name
Close Every Door
Secret Place
Little Bit Of Sympathy
Encores:
Fool And Me
Lady Love
And
you know to be honest, I would have loved to have played a bit with the
band maybe at the soundcheck.... but there is just no time for that unfortunatly
. I had mentioned this to them but only under the condition that Robin
was not in the building!
It would
have been fun!
