Sea Goddess Bench: Aptly named, since the sea gave me this remarkable piece of wood precisely when I needed it. However, I did have to swim for it in mid-November. I sawed off what I needed for the bench and then had the piece towed by boat to another beach. Getting the rope to the boat for towing necessitated swimming in the very chilly water again early on the morning of December 1st. Once at the second beach, the piece was winched across the beach and lifted by a crane and taken to my shop.

The aesthetic of the bench is that it appears as a found object that has undergone a minumum amount of alteration to become a bench. The roots form the "legs" at one end, and the other has a simple timber-frame support. There are stones embedded in the roots, and I jammed a few extra round stones in to give it a more bejeweled look. The bench is 9ft long. The remaining 2/3 of the stump would make another nice bench. Any takers? |
