Raven's Nest Tree Sculpture
serves as a headboard and canopy for this bed at the Sooke Harbour House. The tree is 14'6" high and it reaches more than 60" toward the foot of the bed, and the same distance across this king bed.
I modelled the tree after local arbutus trees because of the almost human elbows and shoulders the branches appear to have. I feel that a tree with this much curve in the branches seems to belong in the room as opposed to one that looks like it might want to grow out through the walls and ceiling.
The wood is entirely western white pine. Yes, the species has this incredible variety of colours.

Windswept
Here is another tree, so I guess it is safe to say that I did get to build and carve another one of these. Windswept is carved from yellow cedar. The branches and roots are joined using mortise and tenon joinery.
