The Cossaboom Family

Jan Evertszen Karseboom or Karsseboom came from Holland to Bergen, New Jersey, in 1665 and took the Oath of Allegiance there. He lived in Bergen, but the marriage record and baptism of his children were recorded in the records of the Dutch Reformed Church of New Amsterdam (New York), from 1665-1682. He married Grietje Jaspers. Since no record of him is given after 1682, he probably died, as the widow remarried January 1, 1693.

The children of Jan & Grietje are Everts, Jan, Grietje, Jannetje and Marritje (records show date of birth of each). Everts Karseboom married Patience Jones. Of this union four children were born, three of which died young. The three were Everts, John and Lysbeth. David born Sep 20, 1696, survived.

David lived at Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. He married Sarah VanVolser, daughter of William VonVolser and Janeje Losee. David Karrseboom and his wife Sarah, had six children, viz., Mehittabel, Jannetje, Marritje, Gerritt and Sara (dates of their baptisms are recorded). William, the Loyalist, soon wrote his name Cosseboom. The name Coseboom or Cossaboom as it is now spelled in Holland, and America, means Cherry Tree.

William was brought up at Oyster Bay, Long Island, but came to Digby in 1783. A wife and four children over 10 years old accompanied him. He and three sons received grants of land: Samuel at Culloden, David at Gulliver's Cove (Gulliver's Hole as it was known in the early days) and James (uncertain) "perhaps at Little River".
