-Raised in Lincolnshire

-Educated Rugby School. 

-Royal Military Academy; 1843-47

-Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant; Oct.1847

-Promoted Lieutenant; Nov. 1851 (passed over 3 times)

-Promoted 2nd Captain; May 1856

-Promoted Captain; April 1862

-Landed at Esquimalt on the "Thames City", April 12th 1858. 

-Served in British Columbia 1858-1863 (Adjutant; Executive Officer 
Lands and Works) 

-Wore monocle in right eye. 

-Called "Old Scrooge" by troops 

-Enjoyed theatre, oriental studies, cricket and boating

-Played the flute.

-Married Caroline Mary Leggatt; Oct.1863

-No war service

-"Captain especially adapted for the strictly military part of the work", according to Horse Guards.
