The "Beukema" family name originated in in Brandenburg, Germany, and traces their ancestral roots back to Prussian origin. Our Beukema family roots begin in Hornhuizen, Baflo, Groningen, Netherlands and the most current "Beukema's" were from Winsum, Groningen, Netherlands. Surnames in the Netherlands were somewhat difficult to figure out before the decree actually came into place where people had to actually take a surname for themselves. Prior to this time it was common for the surname to keep changing back and forth from parent to child and even several different spellings were seen. For example; Jan Jacobs would have a son and he would be called Jacob Jans (pluralizing the father's first name) and then Jacob Jans could have a son and he would be called Jan Jacobs. This becomes very apparent with our line of "Beukema's" and the name changes back and forth between Beukema, Buikema and Boijkema. By including the changes back and forth from the name Beukema (spelling of "Buikema") our descendants range from "Buikema" in 1831 to "Albert Alberts" in 1695 who was married to "Koertje Rijpkes Boijkema" daughter of Rijpke Jans "Beukema". |
