The Task

Will you say or ?

You must decide whether or not to admit a new member to your group.

You will be working with two or three other artist members of your movement to make this decision.

Two or three group members will take on the personalities of artists already in the group.  One group member will take on the personality of the artist who wants to join the group.

You must each analyze an art work created by your artist personality.   The prospective member will share their work and analysis with the group.  As a group you must compare and contrast all of the work to help you determine if the new member should be admitted or not.

To decide if the prospective member may join you must consider the following questions:

  • Does their philosophy of Art fits with yours?
  • Do they share your social concerns?
  • Do they share your vision of what Art is?
  • Do they share your interest in subject matter?
  • Is their work technically similar to yours?
  • Do they use the elements of art and principles of design the way you do?
  • Would you want to have your work shown with theirs?

You have a choice of methods to communicate your decision to the prospective artist.

The Interview

Present an interview with a prospective artist to the class.  Dress in period costume.  Use a prepared script to question the artist to find out if they fit into your art movement.  The potential member may be right or all wrong.

The Letter

Write a letter to the prospective artist explaining why they were accepted or rejected by your group. Explain how their work and philosophy would make them a benefit to the group or why they should find a different group of artists.

The Artwork

Working together create an artwork that would fit into the Art movement of your choice.  Make a group presentation to the class to explain how the work is representative of the movement.

  The Web Page

Design a Web Page to invite artists to join your group.  Include your artist statement or manifesto and the criteria they must meet to be considered for your group.
