Organization
Organizational skills are very important in grade six.
You will have new challenges of moving around on your own throughout the school.
You are expected to come to class on time, prepared with your completed work, books and supplies.
You will have to juggle the demands of a number of subjects with different teachers.
Tips to Help You Stay Organized
Agenda

Your agenda is your new best friend. You will need to take it everywhere you go. If you use it well you will always be prepared for your classes.
At the beginning of each week you must fill out your schedule for the week.
During each class you will be asked to record due dates for assigned work.
At the end of each day the assigned work, reminders of permission slips, forms, etc. as well as reminders of any work due the following day will be reviewed.
You must get me to initial your agenda before you leave for the day.
It is important to show your agenda to your parents and ask them to sign it once a week. Some families prefer to do this every day.
Your parents may write notes to your teachers and teachers may write notes to your parents to help you to do the best that you can.

Binders & Notebooks
Please put your Language Arts and Social Studies work in one binder.
Your language arts binder should always have your dictionary, thesaurus and novel in it. If you complete class work early you may read without disturbing others. An ideal binder for LA & SS is one with a zippered closure.
Your Language Arts section will be divided into four (4) sections:
Reading
Writing
Spelling
Grammar
The Reading Section includes:
Reading Log
A scribbler for your journal entries
The Writing Section Includes:
All of your writing including planning activities, all drafts and final products (*Do not throw out any of your rough work.)
The Spelling Section includes:
The schonell standardized test (administered in September)
Spelling Scribbler with Lessons and all pre and post tests
The Grammar Section includes:
Grammar Scribbler with Lessons
Non-talking Editing Booklet
Your Social Studies section does not need different sections. We will make them throughout the year.
Please put your Science work in one binder. We will make sections throughout the year.
Your Portfolio will be organized by subject. This year my classes will be doing a pilot project; creating our portfolios electronically in FrontPage. I have created a template for each student to use rather than using a lot of paper. Hopefully we'll save some trees.
The first section will be Understanding Myself As A Learner. It will include:
To see the format go to Grade Six Portfolio Contents.
It's important to be on task in class. This will keep your homework to a minimum.
Homework must be completed on time. If you need help meet with your teacher before the work is due.
If you are prepared with complete work you will be able to participate fully in discussions and therefore earn credit for participation.
If you miss a class you must check with your teacher to find out what you missed so you may catch up.
JWG has a homework policy. If your homework is not complete on time you are assigned to study hall from 3:35 to 4:10 p.m. to complete it.
