so i need some help on this question about Rivers's voice
Hello- well, youll need to be more specific- can you categorize the songs into the different vocal styles you mean? which songs are which? like specifically, can you say "x, x and x all sound like [insert vocal style here] , whereas x, x and x sound more like [insert vocal style here]" ? that sort of info would help rivers answer your question, seriously...also if you could explain how the different styles sound different to you...the more details you can provide about this, the better the answer will be.
-karl
how would you describe his voice(pre-blue demos, blue/pinkerton, green and so forth)?

Re: so i need some help on this question about Rivers's voic
Pre green and summer2k, Rivers had smooth vocals. The vocals flowed better. The range in his voice on Blue and Pink would change frequently. From the quiet say it ain't so intro style to yelling on Getchoo. He would never use the quivering vocals, he would hold the key I guess you could say? It is hard to explain but if you hear the 2 styles you can easily distinguish them apart. On Green and beyond he goes into a quivering voice and stays there. It sounds like he is mumbling sometimes from it. The range is non existant, it sounds more monotone a lot of the time making the song sound more flat.

Re: so i need some help on this question about Rivers's voic
i dont think its really possible to know what his singing voice was like in the pre-blue demos because the tape speed is too fast, making his voice similar to a chipmunk. also, having braces affects how you sing. simple as that.

Re: so i need some help on this question about Rivers's voic
Say pre-green sounded like he sang with more feeling as though it was coming from his heart, a great example of one of these songs is The Good Life, and My Name is Jonas...anything off Blue and Pink...most of the b-sides...sounds less like it was studio produced and shit like today's popular pop music.

Re: so i need some help on this question about Rivers's voic
He definatley does sing differently on most of the Green songs. Not badly, not homosexually, just different. I hear his older style on newer songs like 'The Dawn' and 'We Go Together' - where he doesn't do that vibrato thing with his voice.
Also - a good point to make is that on all the older stuff he sings live, it's for the most part the old Rivers.
This sounds weird, but somebody made this point before - Rivers sings with a an underbite on all the old stuff and now on songs like 'The Dawn', really powering out the lyrics with his stomach. On Green, it sounds like he's singing more from the head and nasal... does that make sense?
As far as Green goes, I think Hash Pipe is closer to the 'old' Rivers (for the most part) then the rest is.

But asschun, if you say something like that to Karl it will just result in the "Rivers getting rid of the emotion in his music" thing. You've gotta go more for the less opinionated angle. Say Blue and Pinkerton are a more natural voice. Green is something different, it's almost forced.
Compare: Teenage Victory Song with ANYTHING pre-summer 2k.
And while you're at it, complain about Brian not doing SHIT on Green. Ask why Rivers is doing his own backup vocals.

Re: so i need some help on this question about Rivers's voic
Just direct them (karl and rivers) to this thread, i think we've stayed away from stupid comments like, "his new voice is gay" for the most part. If i were rivers this would be totally helpful to read. As for my opinion on his voice. Green is more nasal like many of you have said, and that vibrato thing can get a bit annoying. It's weird, but rivers' voice getting better (because it is technically better on green) actually made the music a tad bit worse. It can be overlooked though, but the songs as a whole are a lot better with the range, like asschun said, on green it seems like he's just reading lyrics off. I like the way his voice is on most of the new songs though. Pre-blue, if it is possible to describe, i would say is more "gruffy".. yep gruffy. His voice has gotten better and better, but the middle ground was the best.

Re: so i need some help on this question about Rivers's voic
Heh heh, skipped quite a few posts, but I'll read 'em, but ridd saying that he sounded like the old Rivers when he plays Blue/Tired of Sex live, that's kinda weird...maybe it's like, the only outlet he has to the old him...heh heh...Link to the Past...good game.

better and worse
I like all these comments. The main problem with Rivers singing like he is one of the Three Tenors is that typically rock music is made for a more throaty, harder working voice. The sound of a choir-based voice and heavy guitars in the background does not mesh well at all.
The comment of Brian not singing background can be answered simply: Rivers thought his voice sounded better.

Re: so i need some help on this question about Rivers's voic
That really isnt a good question...
the reason we dont like 'new rivers' is cause he is just singing the melody without any feeling or emotion...
if he sang with feeling and emotion, it would sound like 'old rivers'...

RE:
Maybe you shouldn't write to Karl anymore. Rivers' confidence is at an all time high and the band is being really cool releasing all the stuff to its fans. If you read that AP interview Rivers really seems to be having fun and thats good. I don't think anyone wants another Weezerless age. The new batch of music (i.e. The Dawn, Living Without You, etc.) is not crap. And his voice is just fine in these songs. Maybe don't piss him off and his voice will regress to a more heavier blue/pinkerton sound. Or maybe complaining will help. I don't know.

Re: RE:
i would rather have rivers unhappy and make good music than him being happy. wait, that sounds wrong. bah. i'd rather he take 5 more years off and make something good than continue to write stupid generic stuff. and his voice would be fine if the lyrics were good, but they aren't.
